Getting Started
What is goWalkWise?
goWalkWise transforms your daily walks into virtual tours of amazing cities around the world. As you walk, you’ll discover fascinating stories about iconic locations, learn historical facts, and explore places you’ve always wanted to visit—all while getting exercise!
How It Works
- Choose a Venue: Select a city you want to explore (Paris, Istanbul, New York, etc.)
- Start Walking: Begin your tour and goWalkWise will track your steps
- Discover Stories: Every few hundred steps, you’ll hear fascinating fun facts about the locations
- Reach Locations: When you complete a segment, you’ll “arrive” at that location and see photos
- Complete the Tour: Finish all locations in the city to complete your virtual tour!
Permissions & Setup
What Permissions Does goWalkWise Need?
- Activity Recognition: Required to count your steps during walks
- Health Connect/HealthKit (Optional): For more accurate step tracking
What is a Handicap?
Your handicap personalizes tour distances based on your fitness level. If you walk 5,000 steps daily, tours are shorter than if you walk 10,000 steps daily. This ensures everyone can enjoy tours at their own pace!
During Your Tour
What Happens When I Walk?
- At 25% progress: First fun fact about the location
- At 50% progress: Second fun fact
- At 75% progress: Third fun fact
- At 100% arrival: Photo of the location and map showing your progress
Can I Pause My Tour?
Yes! You can close the app at any time. goWalkWise will remember your progress and resume where you left off when you return.
What If My Phone Restarts?
No problem! The AWTY Engine tracks your progress even if your phone restarts. When you reopen goWalkWise, you’ll be able to resume your tour.
Troubleshooting
Fun Facts Aren’t Appearing
Milestone notifications may take 1-2 minutes to appear due to Health Connect sync delays. This is normal. Keep walking and the fun fact will appear!
App Says “Permission Denied”
Make sure you’ve granted Activity Recognition permission in Settings. If you just granted it, try restarting the app.
Tour Won’t Start
Check that you have:
- Completed your profile
- Granted Activity Recognition permission
- Internet connection (for initial tour data download)
