How to Play WalkWise

#Every Step a Story

WalkWise is a virtual tour. You do not need to be in Paris, New York, Istanbul, etc. Choose any city in the app, then walk anywhere you like (your neighborhood, treadmill, park, hallway). Your steps move you through the tour.

Quick Start

  1. Create your Games Afoot account (one account works across Games Afoot Apps).
  2. Sign in to WalkWise.
  3. Pick a venue (a city or themed tour).
  4. Start walking anywhere. WalkWise counts your steps and advances you through the tour.
  5. Arrive at virtual locations to see photos and content.
  6. Continue until you complete the full tour.

How the Virtual Tour Works

Real Steps
WalkWise uses your phone’s step counter. Every step you take in the real world moves you forward in the tour.

Virtual Locations
The locations are part of a guided story route. You “arrive” when you complete the step goal for that segment.

You can complete tours over multiple sessions. If you stop, you can pick up where you left off later.

Permissions (Required)

WalkWise needs permission to count steps. Without this, the app can’t advance your tour.

  • Motion & Fitness / Activity Recognition: required for step counting
  • Notifications (Android Only): Required to allow background tracking of steps.

Tips for a Smooth Experience

  • Carry your phone (in your pocket or hand) so steps are counted consistently.
  • Treadmill friendly: treadmill steps work great—just keep your phone on you.
  • Take breaks: you can pause and continue later. Progress is designed for real life.

FAQ

Do I need to be physically in the city I chose?

No. WalkWise is a virtual tour. Your steps are real, but the locations are virtual—walk anywhere you want.

Does WalkWise track my GPS location?

No. WalkWise is designed around steps. The tour is advanced by your step count, not by your physical GPS position.

Why is the app asking for Motion & Fitness?

That permission lets WalkWise read step count data so it can track progress through each tour segment.

I’m not seeing steps count correctly.

Make sure Motion & Fitness (or Activity Recognition) is allowed, and keep your phone on you while walking. If you still have trouble, contact support.
